A concept of capillary active, dynamic insulation integrated with heating, cooling and ventilation, air conditioning system

Mark BOMBERG

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2010, Volume 4, Issue 4,   Pages 431-437 doi: 10.1007/s11709-010-0071-9

Abstract: When a historic fa?ade needs to be preserved or when the seismic considerations favor use of a concrete wall system and fire considerations limit exterior thermal insulation, one needs to use interior thermal insulation systems. Interior thermal insulation systems are less effective than the exterior systems and will not reduce the effect of thermal bridges. Yet they may be successfully used and, in many instances, are recommended as a complement to the exterior insulation. This paper presents one of these cases. It is focused on the most successful applications of capillary active, dynamic interior thermal insulation. This happens when such insulation is integrated with heating, cooling and ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) system. Starting with a pioneering work of the Technical University in Dresden in development of capillary active interior insulations, we propose a next generation, namely, a bio-fiber thermal insulation. When completing the review, this paper proposes a concept of a joint research project to be undertaken by partners from the US (where improvement of indoor climate in exposed coastal areas is needed), China (indoor climate in non-air conditioned concrete buildings is an issue), and Germany (where the bio-fiber technology has been developed).

Efficiency Optimization of Variable Frequency Variable Speed Water-supply Pumping Stations Based on Genetic

Liao Li,Lin Jiaheng,Zhang Chenghui

Strategic Study of CAE 2002, Volume 4, Issue 9,   Pages 54-58

Abstract:

Water-supply enterprise consumes much of electric energy in the city, and the quantity it consumes mainly depends on the pumps of pumping stations. So it is important to optimize operation of water-supply pumping stations, for safety water supply and saving energy. This paper presents an optimal scheduling model of water-supply pumping stations based on approximation of exponent curve. Corresponding to the model, solutions based on genetic algorithm are introduced. The simulation resuls illustrate its validity.

A building-based data capture and data mining technique for air quality assessment

Ni SHENG, U Wa TANG

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2011, Volume 5, Issue 4,   Pages 543-551 doi: 10.1007/s11783-011-0369-4

Abstract: Recently, a building-based air quality model system which can predict air quality in front of individual buildings along both sides of a road has been developed. Using the Macau Peninsula as a case study, this paper shows the advantages of building-based model system in data capture and data mining. Compared with the traditional grid-based model systems with input/output spatial resolutions of 1–2 km, the building-based approach can extract the street configuration and traffic data building by building and therefore, can capture the complex spatial variation of traffic emission, urban geometry, and air pollution. The non-homogeneous distribution of air pollution in the Macau Peninsula was modeled in a high-spatial resolution of 319 receptors·km . The spatial relationship among air quality, traffic flow, and urban geometry in the historic urban area is investigated. The study shows that the building-based approach may open an innovative methodology in data mining of urban spatial data for environmental assessment. The results are particularly useful to urban planners when they need to consider the influences of urban form on street environment.

Self-centering steel plate shear walls for improving seismic resilience

Patricia M. CLAYTON,Daniel M. DOWDEN,Chao-Hsien LI,Jeffrey W. BERMAN,Michel BRUNEAU,Laura N. LOWES,Keh-Chuan TSAI

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2016, Volume 10, Issue 3,   Pages 283-290 doi: 10.1007/s11709-016-0344-z

Abstract: As part of a Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation research project led by researchers at the University of Washington with collaborators at University at Buffalo, and Taiwan National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering, a self-centering steel plate shear wall (SC-SPSW) system has been developed to achieve enhanced seismic performance objectives, including recentering. The SC-SPSW consists of thin steel infill panels, referred to as web plates that serve as the primary lateral load-resisting and energy dissipating element of the system. Post-tensioned (PT) beam-to-column connections provide system recentering capabilities. A performance-based design procedure has been developed for the SC-SPSW, and a series of nonlinear response history analyses have been conducted to verify intended seismic performance at multiple hazard levels. Quasi-static subassembly tests, quasi-static and shake table tests of scaled three-story specimens, and pseudo-dynamic tests of two full-scale two-story SC-SPSWs have been conducted. As a culmination of this multi-year, multi-institutional project, this paper will present an overview of the SC-SPSW numerical and experimental research programs. This paper will also discuss innovative PT connection and web plate designs that were investigated to improve constructability, resilience, and seismic performance and that can be applied to other self-centering and steel plate shear wall systems.
